We are a community of landscape designers and contractors

We design and install eco-friendly landscapes and have been doing this for 18 years and more. We know what works and what doesn’t in this tricky location on the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains. We mostly work for residential clients and beautify landscapes of commercial settings too.

I am Laureen Rama

My lifelong passion is beautifying landscapes in ways that enhance the natural environment.

I have been landscaping most of my life, from helping my parents landscape yards as a child, in towns across Western Canada, to beautifying landscapes as an adult, inspired by travelling and living in different landscapes around the world and North America.

I’ve taken courses, read lots of books and magazines, visited and spoken to gardeners whenever and wherever I can, and experimented with what works and what doesn’t in many different kinds of yards. I love flowers and have created about 200 flower essences in the wild from Western Canadian flowers. I love hiking and hanging out in the mountains near Calgary and, since my early 20’s, have studied how the wild plants work together, especially the colour combinations. I try to duplicate that in my landscape designs, so they feel natural and alive.

I have worked as an international development educator, public involvement consultant, management consultant specializing in creativity, shamanic healer and teacher, and owned and operated a landscaping company I founded in Calgary for 16 years. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Cultural Anthropology and International Development Studies and a Master of Adult Education Degree focused on Creativity in the Workplace.

The life of all beings on earth depends on the vitality of our topsoil and the plants that grow in it. I believe we can landscape in ways that restore the Earth. In doing so we create a healthier, more fruitful and beautiful world.

I work with designers and contractors who love the earth too!

our mission

To encourage a world-wide change in landscaping practices to landscapes which restore the natural environment.

This means landscapes that have a diversity of plants that are colourful and beautiful year-round. The plants flower at different times supporting pollinators throughout the growing season. These are landscapes that don't need watering after the first three years once plants are established and that soak in snow and rain melt to restore underground water tables and lessen runoff into rivers and streams. These landscapes are easy to maintain with organic methods such as the use of compost and compost tea.

We inspire through our designs and landscapes, educate through books and videos and social media, and provide resources so that others can landscape sustainably too.

our vision

A WORLD WITH A LOT LESS LAWN - ONLY WHERE NEEDED FOR PLAYING IN PARKS, FOR SPORTS AND FOR PICNICS.

Instead, lots of vibrant bushes, shrubs and flowers. Imagine city boulevards with daylilies or wildflower meadows or beautiful berry bushes rather than weedy grass that is usually brown and needs to be mowed.

Food growing lots of places - in front yards, on rooftops, in community gardens. Healthy people and pets because chemicals are not used on landscapes.

Birds, butterflies, and bees in abundance as they were when I grew up in Western Canada. People outside in their beautiful yards and communities, meeting in their gardens and enjoying weeding and harvesting together.

the story of
eco-friendly landscapes

In my mid-40’s I fell ill because of chemical sensitivities and could not continue with my previous career...

...because I could not be around people and their smells (deodorant, shampoo). I had lots of fired up energy, so I started offering my friends to re-do their yards as a way to keep myself sane. Landscaping was already a pastime I had been doing for years to relax and switch gears from my people work. Gardening and designing helped me heal. It kept me focused on beauty and something I loved.

Friends suggested I start a landscaping business. I had already started other businesses, so I decided to give it a try and started my first landscaping company called Beauty Way and later Eco-yards™, which I sold in 2021. I took a few years off and in 2024, started Eco-Friendly Landscapes as a community of designers and contractors who work together to offer eco-friendly landscaping services.

The mask I wore for years to filter out smells.

In my mid-40’s I fell ill with chemical sensitivities and could not do consulting work (my previous career) because I could not be around people and their smells (deodorant, shampoo).

I had already started other businesses, so I decided to give it a try and started my first landscaping company called Beauty Way and later called Eco-yards™. I had a notice in the Open for Business section of the Calgary Herald newspaper. People were attracted to my use of Feng Shui in design and I started getting clients.

One of my clients was involved with a group that was lobbying to phase out pesticide use in Calgary. She asked me to come to a meeting and I became involved, writing a website for the group Coalition for a Healthy Calgary that provided information on how to garden and landscape without pesticides. We used the web-site, and a media campaign I led, to get a bylaw initiated that would phase out cosmetic pesticide use on landscapes. We were successful. The Councillors who sponsored the Draft Bylaw later rescinded it in hopes of passing a more effective bylaw in the future.

I learned in research for the website the horrible effect on health and development, especially of children, of pesticide use. That solidified my commitment to organic methods. I also learned that most of the developed world had phased out cosmetic pesticide use, including in Canada. The prairie provinces were the hold outs. I learned that most of the world didn't have lawn predominant in their landscapes. These were all encouraging things to know.

The same client encouraged me to write a book based on the website and I did! I wrote and self -published Eco-yards™. A few years later it was re-published by New Society Publishing.

One winter, as I was wondering what more I could do for the state of the global environment, I went to a talk about compost tea. I learned that the soils of the world had lost so much organic matter through the use of chemicals and tilling. I also learned that making a liquid tea of concentrated soil micro-organisms was the fastest, easiest, least expensive way to restore soils. Within a few days, I had decided to pioneer offering a compost tea spray service for urban yards - something rarely done then - most compost tea had been used in agriculture.

I took courses in making compost tea and learning to use the microscope to evaluate the quality of microbes in compost and compost tea. I worked with experts across North America, and my Dad - a chemical engineer who had designed gas plants - to design the tea brewer equipment and the spray equipment. I tested 7 of the commercial compost sources in Calgary, tested my own worm compost and yard compost, and developed a compost mix that had the best variety and numbers of micro-organisms to make the tea.

In 2008, I was ready to launch the compost tea spray service at the Calgary Horticultural Society Garden Show. They asked me to do a display garden, as their theme was Sustainable Landscaping. Our display garden was a hit - people were lined up 4 deep to talk to me. My company really grew after that. The focus of my work became design and installation. I did more display gardens over the years. I still had a compost tea service and and am happy to report that many companies around the world now offer compost tea spray and many homeowners make it at home.

With my landscaping crew, I kept experimenting with new and better ways to do sustainable landscaping. For example, pioneering using newspaper and cardboard to cover lawns, building rock rivers that help water soak into yards, using perforated flexible pipe under the soil to distribute water.

DURING INSTALLATION

After installation

I did many talks on sustainable landscaping in the Calgary area at the Calgary Public Library and for other public and private groups. I wanted to popularize these methods. Two of the talks were filmed, edited and posted on YouTube.

Teaching children about compost.

In 2021, I sold Eco-yards™ and took a few years away from directly landscaping. I needed some time to heal from health challenges and step away from the intensity of running a full-service landscaping company. I was able to heal with the help of some compassionate practitioners who offer effective and not well known treatments. I am still on my healing journey. On this website I offer resources and articles to share what I have learned about getting well. This is part of sustainability too, being able to sustain our own health and well-being.

In 2023, I started doing some landscape design work again and my passion for creating functional, beautiful, natural spaces for clients was rekindled. My latest frontier is using more native plants, especially low ground cover plants as living pathways and patios. I am also working with some of my native plant suppliers to develop a wild strawberry turf. I am keenly learning more about rainwater storage so that we can maximize rainwater storage for our clients in attractive and functional ways.

In 2024, I started Eco-Friendly Landscapes as a community of designers and contractors who work together to offer eco-friendly landscaping services.

I hope you've found this history inspirational and will connect with us to explore how we can work together to create a beautiful and sustainable yard for you.

Colleen Cyca

assistant landscape designer

I've had a life-long love of plants that started in my grandparents' garden. I began gardening in 2000 with herbs in containers, namely calendula.

In 2010 I was introduced to permaculture principles and have been passionate about them ever since. Permaculture is a systems-approach to meeting human needs in ways that are in line with nature. I completed my Permaculture Design Certificate in 2023 through Verge Permaculture with additional masterclasses in rainwater harvesting and passive solar greenhouse design. My engineering degree and my experience in design (silversmithing, makeup artistry, and instructional design) work well together as I bring my passion to others.

I get excited talking about gardening and working with people to find solutions for their property and lifestyle. My areas of interest include medicinal and native plants, growing and preserving food, working with rainwater, soil health and biodiversity, and making spaces inviting and playful for children. My young family are my testers. I love exploring how all these parts work together. I'm slowly transitioning my lawn into garden and food forest space with honeybees. Food forests are intentional groups of edible plants where each plant plays a specific role in an attempt to mimic natural ecosystems. My rainwater harvesting system is always being tweaked as I test out new ideas. And my compost system is growing as I learn more and try more. I'm inspired to learn from and work with Nature, our greatest teacher.

He understands the importance of developing a relationship with his clients in order to ensure that the space they create together is not only beautiful but also finds the balance between functionality and sustainability.

Thomas is looking forward to working with new clients who are interested in the benefits of sustainable landscaping. His skills and knowledge are sure to be an asset in helping you create your perfect outdoor living space.

When construction is part of the installation, Thomas Sharuga of Paradise Landscape is a great choice as contractor. When I asked the CEO of a large landscape supply company in Calgary who he would recommend, he said Thomas Sharuga was the only choice. “I would not even recommend anyone else - he is the best.”
