When you want to grow vegetables and herbs, a raised garden bed is a great way to be able to have rich, organic soil and plants at a level that is easy to reach. We can make beds from wood and prefer to use cedar 4 x 4’s as the wood lasts a long time. Metal horse troughs are an option and pre-made metal beds are available in lots of colours, shapes and sizes.
The first four photos here show wicking beds. A water reservoir that we build underneath the bed fills automatically from your downspout or you can fill it with a hose. The moisture wicks up from below into the soil. This makes watering easy and plants thrive in these beds.
